BRUNSWICK — Contrasting paintings by Mary Alice Treworgy and photographs by Alan Sockloff will be on display through Feb. 28 at the Town Council Chambers.

“I want to define the architectural and figural landscape with geometry, subtle values, sometimes idiosyncratic colors and by flattening the picture plane. These images are identifiable, but leave out the prosaic, trite and cliched,” Treworgy said.

A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, she worked as a commercial artist for seven years. Later, when her three children were in school all day, she began auditing advanced painting classes at Bowdoin College, then took classes at the University of Southern Maine and the Maine College of Art.

Since 1994, she has been represented by various galleries and her works have been exhibited in many museum, college and gallery auctions, and biennials.

“While I have been taking snapshots since I was 10 years old, it has been only during the last 20 years or so that I have specialized in black-and-white photography as an art form, using a large format view camera,” Sockloff said.

“The kinds of subjects I have sought have varied from abstract patterns of rocks, scrap metal and water flow to landscapes and waterscapes. I consider being able to photograph coastal Maine a photographer’s dream because of the great diversity it offers in subject, mood, weather and lighting,” he said. Sockloff is represented by Addison-Woolley Gallery in Portland and Saltwater Artists Gallery at Pemaquid Point.

The exhibit will be on view during regular council meetings, school board and other committee meetings at the council chambers at Maine Street Station, 16 Station Ave. It is the fourth in a series of quarterly showings to promote the creativity of local artists. In addition, images of the work will be shown on local access television Channel 3.
