A passing motorist likely saved a barn from catching fire on Ridge Road in Wales on Thursday night, a fire official said.

A man from Monmouth driving past the farm at 222 Ridge Road noticed smoke coming from a barn, Wales Fire Chief Anthony Siderio said.

After stopping to investigate, the motorist went around to the back of the barn and found a tractor inside engulfed in flames. He awakened the homeowner, Tom O’Connell, and called 911 shortly after 10 p.m.

O’Connell shoveled snow on the burning tractor and managed to put out the blaze before firefighters arrived on scene. The tractor was a total loss, Siderio said.

Had it not been for the actions of the passing motorist, O’Connell “he probably could have lost the whole barn,” which measured roughly 150 feet by 40 feet, Siderio said.

“We got lucky,” he said.
