WATERVILLE (AP) — Maine fire officials say a 55-year-old woman has died in an apartment fire in Waterville.
The state fire marshal’s office says firefighters were called at 2:30 a.m. Saturday to a four-unit apartment house on Silver Place.
The first-floor apartment, where the first started, was filled with smoke and fire.
When firefighters entered the apartment, they found the body of Janet York in her bed.
Officials say they suspect the first started from improper disposal of smoking materials in a trash can in the living room.
The death came just hours after the state recorded its safest year on record for lowest number of fire deaths — 9 — in a single year.
