MADISON — Junior forward James Barker tossed a team-leading 19 points to lift Jay to a 55-51 victory over Madison in MVC boys’ basketball action Monday.
The Tigers (9-3) trailed 21-19 at the half and dropped another two points in the third quarter. But, Barker ignited a 24-16 run in the fourth with eight of his 19 points for a come-from-behind victory.
Nate Shink contributed five field goals for 10 points for Jay.
Senior forward Cody Briggs recorded a game-high 20 points for the Bulldogs (2-5).
Winthrop 47, St. Dom’s 41
WINTHROP — Senior guard Billy Gordon drained 13 points in a well-balanced matchup as Winthrop took a 47-41 victory over St. Dom’s in MVC boys’ basketball action Monday.
The Ramblers (4-2) marched through the first three quarters, scoring 11 points in each frame. Winthrop led 22-21 at the half and improved their margin by two at the end of three.
Junior guard Tyler Foster provided the Ramblers with seven points and posted nine rebounds in the winning effort.
Kurt Johnson notched a game-high 14 points for the Saints (3-3), while Joe Bryant tossed 10 points on four field goals, including one from three-point range, and a free throw.
Wiscasset 63, Lisbon 33
LISBON – Twelve different Redskins hit the scoring column as Wiscasset routs Lisbon 63-33 in MVC boys’ basketball action.
Unbeaten Wiscasset (6-0) jumped out to a commanding 34-8 lead through two quarters cruising to the victory. Caleb Bryant led all scorers with 10 points while teammates Devin Grover and Tyler Sonia chipped in with seven points apiece in the win.
Senior guard Mike Degou paced the Greyhounds (0-7) with 10 points including a 3-point bucket. Tobey Harrington also added seven points in the loss.
Monmouth 48, Hall-Dale 30
MONMOUTH – Senior Roger Bachelder poured in a game high 18 points as three different players reach double digits in points as Monmouth downed Hall-Dale 48-30 in boys’ basketball action.
Tied after one quarter, Monmouth outcored their MVC rival 15-6 in the second quarter to take a decisive 22-13 halftime lead. The Mustangs never looked back. Senior guard Tim Whitmore followed with 15 points for the Mustangs (5-2) while Robby Neal chipped in with a dozen points. Neal and Whitmore each netted a pair of 3-point baskets in the victory.
Hall-Dale (2-5) was paced by Zach Plummer who registered a team high 16 points including a trio of 3-pointers in the defeat.
Girls’ basketball
St. Dom’s 37, Winthrop 31
WINTHROP – Allaina Murphy scored eight of her game high 25 points in the fourth quarter as St. Dom’s held off Winthrop 37-31 in girls’ hoop action on Monday.
The Saints dashed out to a 13-0 lead after one quarter. Winthrop cut the deficit to 17-10 at halftime. A strong third quarter put Winthrop ahead leading into the final frame.
St. Dom’s took the lead back for good behind Murphy’s strong play as they were able to put away the Ramblers for good. Nikki Scott led Winthrop (2-4) with nine points. Junior Mary Caron also chipped in with six points for the Saints (4-3) in the victory.
Dirigo 44, Telstar 22
BETHEL – Senior Hannah Knight registered a game high 13 points to help Dirigo double up Telstar 44-22 in a MVC girls’ basketball bout.
Dirigo’s effective press kept Telstar (0-7) in check taking a commanding 19-7 halftime lead. Alyssa Wade added 12 points for the Cougars (5-2) in the victory.
Cheyanne Day paced the Rebels with nine points grabbing 11 rebounds in the loss.
Women’s basketball
Bates 57, Univ. New England 56
LEWISTON — Annie Burns sank a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Bates to a 57-56 victory over the University of New England in women’s basketball action Monday evening.
The Bobcats (9-2) trailed by 17 points at the 10-minute mark of the second half, and by nine points with four minutes remaining. The Nor’easters (6-5) were held scoreless from that point on, as Bates clawed their way back.
Burns had 10 assists and four steals to pace the Bobcats, while senior Christine McCall grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with her game-high-tying 15 points. Junior Lauren Dobish added 13 points while junior Kelsey Flaherty and sophomroe Allie Beaulieu added nine points apiece.
Junior Kelley Paradis led the Nor’easters with 15 points in the losing effort.
