PORTLAND — Good Theater will open the Maine premiere of the hit show “Moonlight and Magnolias,” Ron Hutchinson’s comedy about “Gone With the Wind,” on Thursday, Feb. 3.

Producer David O. Selznick (played by Stephen Underwood) has stopped production on the biggest movie of all time. He is not happy with the screenplay, so he summons writer Ben Hecht (Brent Askari) and director Victor Fleming (Tony Reilly) to his office. They have five days to complete a new script.

The problem is Hecht hasn’t read the novel, so Selznick and Fleming must enact the entire story. Throw in Selznick’s put-upon secretary, Miss Poppenghul (Lynne McGhee) and audiences will get a vivid look at Hollywood in the 1930s.

Good Theater Artistic Director Brian P. Allen directs the production.

“Moonlight and Magnolias” premiered in Chicago at the famed Goodman Theatre. It was presented off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theatre Club.

The play is based on actual events as recounted in Hecht’s autobiography. “It has been great fun to work on this play. We’ve watched the film and read books on all three of these legendary men,” Allen said.

“Hollywood was so different in the 1930s,” he added. “The studios were family businesses. To think the same director did both ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Gone With the Wind’ in the same year is amazing.”

“Moonlight and Magnolias” will play Feb. 3-27 in Good Theater’s home at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress St. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday ($20); 7:30 p.m. on Friday ($22), 7:30 p.m. on Saturday ($25) and 2 p.m. on Sunday ($25) with a special Wednesday, Feb. 9, show at 7 p.m. ($15) and a 3 p.m. show on Saturday, Feb. 19 ($22).
