Matthew Bissonnette is one happy birthday boy.

One of two players on the Lewiston Maineiacs’ roster celebrating his birthday Sunday (Antoine Houde-Caron is the other), Bissonnette converted a spin-o-rama shootout move into a goal — the Maineiacs’ second in three tries — to lead Lewiston to a 4-3 victory over the Victoriaville Tigres, capping a come-from-behind win in front of 2,266 at Colisee Desjardins.

“This is one I thought we deserved to win,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “I thought we worked hard, we showed a lot of energy the whole game, and I thought we had the momentum for most of the game.”

As for Bissonnette, he and Kirill Kabanov, who also scored in the three-man shootout, have been impressive in drills in practice. Kabanov also scored in a shootout against Moncton with a move to his backhand similar to the one he used Sunday. Bissonnette had attempted the same move in that game, but had missed the net.

This time, he found the cage.

“It’s something you practice a lot,” Houle said. “They’ve been great in practice, so has Michael Chaput (who just missed his chance).”

The win brings the Maineiacs’ season total to 30, the first time they’ve hit that mark since winning 37 in 2007-08, the year after they won the league title, a season during which they played 70 regular-season games.

“It’s good to get the team back on the winning track,” Houle said. “When you go on the road for two like this, you at least want to split. After losing (Saturday) night, we knew we had to come in here and win this game.”

The Maineiacs nearly pulled off the comeback win Saturday, but fell, 7-5, to the same Tigres team after a late empty-netter.

This time, the team made no mistake. Trailing 3-2 with less than two minutes to play in regulation, the Maineiacs swarmed the Victoriaville crease, firing shot after shot at Tigres keeper Antonio Mastropietro.

“He was making all kinds of big saves, he played well,” Houle said.

With a faceoff in the Victoriaville zone, Houle called timeout.

“I wanted to go over a couple of plays, just tell the guys to keep digging,” Houle said.

It worked. Olivier Dame-Malka delivered the tying goal with 1:04 to play on a blast after being set up by defensive partner Sam Carrier.

In overtime, the Maineiacs had the better of the chances, including a breakaway by Etienne Brodeur, but Mastropietro said no each time.

After an early strike from Yanni Gourde, his 18th of the year for the Tigres, the Maineiacs fired back. Chaput scored his 19th of the season 1:52 later to even things up, and Houde-Caron, who celebrated his 21st birthday Sunday, added a short-handed tally for his 11th of the year to put the Maineiacs in front, 2-1.

After a couple of penalties through the middle part of the second period, Lewiston cracked on the penalty kill. Victoriaville tied the game at 2-2 on a Phillip Danault goal, and less than two minutes Yannick Dube later added another to swing the game back into the Tigres’ clutches, setting up the Maineiacs’ third-period heroics.
