FARMINGTON — A  1,500-pound bull on its way to a slaughterhouse Monday afternoon was shot dead after it escaped briefly into woods behind Farmington Ford on Routes 2 and 4.

The animal, owned by Dana Morse of Jay, was being transferred from one trailer to another in the parking lot behind Irving’s Truck Stop when it escaped, Farmington police officer William Tanner said.

“The owner said he saw the light,” Tanner said about the bull running off during the trailer switch.

“Our concern was that he might charge someone,” Tanner said, because it was known to do that, and also its size and location. The Whistle Stop Trail and a housing development are behind the two businesses, so someone could have been on the trail or a child could have been sliding near the houses, he said.

Morse found the bull in woods behind Farmington Ford next to Irving’s and shot him, Tanner said.
