PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo of Jay scored her 1,000th career point as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Plymouth State University Panthers 76-62 in a Little East Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night.
The win is the fifth straight for the Huskies who improve to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the Little East Conference.
DeMillo, who was one of five Southern Maine players in double-figures, scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists and four steals. The 5-foot-7 senior co-captain is the 19th USM women’s basketball player to score 1,000 points in their career. She currently has 1,003 points, 230 rebounds, 248 assists and 121 steals in her career and is third all-time in career three-pointers with 184.
Bates 65, St. Joe’s 52
STANDISH — Bates College (13-4, 1-1 NESCAC) defeated Saint Joseph’s (10-6, 2-1 GNAC), 65-52, in non-conference women’s basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday evening. Ashley Geel led the Royal Blue with 15 points and shot 7-9 from the field in the losing effort.
The Monks came out of the gates quickly and held a 12-6 lead after Abby Young, who tallied 14 points in the contest, hit a jumpshot at the 11:54 mark. The complexion of the game changed completely, but the Bobcats proceeded to outscore the Monks by a 20-1 margin for the remainder of the first half and carried a 26-13 advantage into the intermission.
Saint Joseph’s committed 11 turnovers and went 0-12 from the floor during the Bates run.
Bates sophomore Allie Beaulieu led all scorers with 20 points and went 4-for-6 from downtown in the Bobcats’ triumph. Jessie Igoe added 12 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and Meredith Kelly chipped in with nine points for the visitors.
Men’s basketball
Bates 65, St. Joe’s 50
STANDISH — Bates College shook off St. Joseph’s College with a 65-50 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday night. Monks junior guard Chris Petzy led all players with 17 points in the setback.
Bobcats junior forward John Squires paced the visitors with 13 points and eight caroms while Brian Ellis tallied 12 points and Alex Gallant chipped in with 10.
Bates raced out to a daunting lead in the early minutes, as a 3-pointer from Kyle Philbrook, brother of freshman James Philbrook, both from Auburn, at the 16:47 mark put the Bobcats up by a 12-2 margin. The Monks never fully recovered from the early debt and shot just 25 percent (4-16) from three-point range and 39.6 percent (19-48) overall.
