NORWAY – Members of the Stone-Smart American Legion Post 82 will vote next week to replace two of three flags stolen in early December from the town’s memorial park and to add a security system, Commander Ron Snow said.

The legion’s American, Prisoner of War and State of Maine flags that hung over Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of Paris and Main. They were stolen sometime during the night of Pearl Harbor Day when they were at half staff. The American flag has since been replaced through a donation from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office.

“We have received some donations already,” Snow said of the $250 from residents who want to see the flags replaced.

The Legion has offered a $500 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who stole the flags.

The memorial park is in front of the Rowe Elementary School and across Main Street from the American Legion hall, but has no security around it. Legion members have decided that they will have to put some in place now to protect the new flags.

Anyone who would like to make a donation may mail it to Snow at the Stone-Smart American Legion Post 82, 23 Harrison Road, Norway, ME 04268.

People with information about the missing flags may call Norway police at 743-5303 or the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department at 743-9554.
