I am writing because I am deeply disappointed in the Sun Journal’s coverage of the destruction of the United Baptist Church.

Not only is this the loss of a community landmark, it is the culmination of a tragic loss of an important faith community. Members of the congregation and members of the community contributed significant funds in the 1990s to renovate the basement of the church, which included a gymnasium.

The building provided space for important community organizations including the Toy Library, the Maine Music Society and the YMCA. Many local residents, members of the congregation who grew up in the church and had been part of the church family for more than 25 years, lost their church home.

The Sun Journal interviewed the minister who abandoned the church, as well as a local historian. That was followed up by a photo montage and a brief interview with a long-time member.

Please report on serious issues — why was the church abandoned after half its members were expelled? Where did the endowed funds go? What will happen to the stained glass windows, the pews, the tower clock, etc.?
