AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Some Maine medical students are decrying a plan to cut $125,000 in scholarship money from a program for the state’s future doctors.
In Monday testimony before the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee, students from a number of Maine communities told lawmakers the proposal could hurt the state’s ability to get and keep doctors.
The proposal to cut the scholarships is part of Gov. Paul LePage’s supplemental budget, designed to balance state spending through June 30.
There are now 14 Maine students in the program. They are eligible for $25,000 for each of their four years of medical school.
The Portland Press Herald reports state officials say the cuts wouldn’t affect anyone in the program now.
