OXFORD — The Oxford Fire Department extinguished two small fires Tuesday.
At 554 King St., a trailer belonging to Judith Cummings caught on fire at about 5:18 a.m., partially due to a space heater running underneath it. The floor of the bedroom caught on fire.
A passing motorist called dispatchers when he saw the smoke, and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. Oxford fire Chief Scott Hunter estimated the damage at $5,000.
He said the occupants are still living in the trailer and still have heat, but repairs are needed for the floor and electrical wiring.
Hunter said there were no working smoke detectors in the home. “They were lucky the gentleman driving by noticed it,” he said.
On Smith Road, which is off Skeetfield Road, a device used to screen gravel caught on fire just after noon when a torch was being used to keep the conveyor belt from freezing.
