LEWISTON — Think you’ve shoveled enough after the most recent storm?

Not so fast. Fire officials believe you may have a little left to do. Specifically, they want you to clear your back door or other secondary means of exiting your home.

“People do not realize the importance until they have an emergency and their primary exit is blocked,” Lewiston Fire Inspector Paul Ouellette said. “There is little or no time in an emergency.”

It wouldn’t hurt to clear snow around the fire hydrant out front, either. City crews make the rounds after each storm, Ouellette said, but many hydrants don’t get dug out right away.

“Clearing your second means of egress and nearby hydrant,” Ouellette said, “can save your life and property.”

Clearing out secondary exits isn’t just a good way to ensure your family can get outside, it’s also a way for emergency crews to get inside when they are needed, Ouellette said.
