PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The husband of an unsuccessful candidate in last year’s Democratic gubernatorial primary is revealing his role behind an anonymous website critical of independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler.
Thom Rhoads issued a statement Thursday admitting his involvement in the Cutler Files website. Rhoads said his wife, Rosa Scarcelli, had no involvement.
The Maine ethics commission on Thursday reaffirmed its earlier decision to fine political consultant Dennis Bailey $200 for his involvement in the site. The commission did not find that Rhoads violated any state campaign finance laws.
During last fall’s gubernatorial campaign, Cutler’s campaign contended the website contained malicious, defamatory and false statements. The site was highly critical of Cutler’s political, business and personal background and labeled him “a phony and a fraud.”
