WALES — Oak Hill High School’s Theater in the Woods will present “Stop the World, I Want to Get Off” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-13. This is a thought-provoking tale about the fleeting nature of worldly success.
Set against the backdrop of a circus, “Stop the World” focuses on Littlechap (played by Zachary Fisher), whose first major step toward improving his lot is to marry Evie (Amanda Bloss), his boss’s daughter.
Saddled with the responsibilities of a family, he allows his growing dissatisfaction with his existence to lead him into the arms of various women—Russian Anya (Karissa Panzino), German Ilse (Cassidy Stevens) and American Ginnie (Megan Rodrigue). He searches for something better than he has, only to realize in the twilight of his life that what he always had, the love of his wife, was more than enough to sustain him.
The London West End production opened on July 20, 1961, at the Queen’s Theatre, where it ran for 485 performances. On Broadway in 1962, it played for 555 performances at the Shubert and Ambassador theaters and enjoyed a Broadway revival in 1978.
Rounding out the Oak Hill High School cast are Gwenyth Fraser as Susan; Kayla Gayton as Jane; chorus members Jack Champagne, Jacob Burnham, Patrick Austin, Patrick Caskin, Kenyon Fraser, Matthew McKeown and September Brooks; and Travis Nadeau, a fourth-grader from Litchfield, as Little Littlechap.
Thie show is directed by Lucy Rioux with musical direction by John Neal. Helen Sherman is technical director; Jessica Casey is stage manager. Making up the tech crew are Declan Doyle, Chris Jones, Elijah Washburn, Jacob Kupfer, Simon Fair and Taylor Pelletier.
The show will begin at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11-12 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13. Tickets, which will be sold at the door, are $7, $5 for seniors and students. For more information, contact Rioux at 582-5717 or [email protected].
