LEWISTON — Leon N. Smith, 66, of Auburn, passed away on Monday, Jan. 31, at Central Maine Medical Center after battling a year-long illness.

He was born in Gardiner, Jan. 22, 1945, a son of the late Herbert and Mary (Peaslee) Smith. After graduating from high school and attending college for two years, he served his country in both the Army and Air Force doing multiple tours in Vietnam. He married the love of his life, Cheryl Sauer on July 3, 1976 in Bangor.

On June 8, 2010, Leon and Cheryl renewed their vows and love for each other. Together they worked and raised their family in Auburn. He was a laminator at Pioneer Plastics for 33 years before retiring in 2007.

He was a member of East Auburn Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling extensively with Cheryl and always looked forward to the Annual Balloon Festival. He loved jumping out of planes, voluntering to drive for Community Concepts and was a great family man who cherished his time spent with his wife and children. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and he touched many lives and will be missed sadly by his family and friends.

Leon is survived by his wife of more than 33 years, Cheryl; two daughters, Sheena Woodsome of Florida, and Pepper Smith of Auburn: one son, Joshua Smith of Auburn: four sisters, Anita, Lucille, Lolly and Laurie: two brothers, Rodney and Herbert; four grandchildren, Codie, Mariah, D.J. and Lily; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Jerry.
