LIVERMORE FALLS — Residents will be asked in June if they want to change from electing a town clerk/treasurer to hiring one, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said Thursday.
If voters approve the change, it would not go into effect until July 1, 2012.
Flagg, who is also the town clerk/treasurer, plans to resign those two positions at the end of June and go full time as town manager on July 1.
Selectmen chose her to lead the town from among 35 applicants.
Once she becomes manager full time, she will hire someone to fill the town clerk/treasurer position until June 30, 2012.
Selectmen would like the position to be a hired one rather than elected, Flagg said.
She was initially hired as the town clerk/treasurer nearly 23 years ago when Maxine Bailey, who held the position, was hired as town manager, Flagg said.
The next year, Flagg ran for the position and has been elected ever since.
If residents reject the warrant article to hire a clerk/treasurer, whoever Flagg hires would need to seek election in 2012 in order to stay in that office.
Flagg said she and the board may look at hiring within the town office.
There is no residency requirement for the elected position and the officer doesn’t have to be a registered voter in the town, she said. The person only has to be 18 and a U.S. citizen, Flagg said.
