Gov. Paul LePage and the new Legislature deserve applause for their commitment to a less expensive and more efficient government.

If they are really serious about these goals, why not set an example by working to reduce the size of the Legislature and merge the Maine Turnpike Authority with the Maine Department of Transportation?

Why does one of the poorest states in the nation need the tenth largest Legislature for a population that ranks 41st in the country?

In addition, many taxpayers believe that Maine needs and can only afford one Department of Transportation. New Hampshire seems to do quite well at managing a quality system of toll and non-toll highways with one department.
