BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) — City leaders in Biddeford want Maine lawmakers to amend state law to clear the way for a $125 milllion racino.

The Portland Press Herald reports that city councilors voted 6-3 on Tuesday on a resolution urging the Legislature to make statutory amendments allowing the Biddeford Downs plan to go forward without requiring a statewide referendum.

Maine’s gambling law now bans racinos.

Supporters of the plan filed petitions containing more than 76,000 signatures last month, and Biddeford voters signed off on the plan in November. But there are obstacles, including an Oxford County casino plan approved by Maine voters that bars other gambling operations within 100 miles of an Oxford casino.
