LIVERMORE FALLS —Fire officials are investigating a fire was intentionally set in the doorway of The Treasure Chest on Depot Street early Wednesday, fire Chief Gerry Pineau said.

They are asking anyone with information about the fire to call Livermore Falls police at 897-3424 or state fire investigators at 657-3030.

About 45 firefighters from Livermore Falls, Jay, Livermore and Wilton responded to assist on the call at 1:28 a.m. that reported a bucket on fire, Pineau said.

Livermore Falls police officer Eric Bernier and firefighter James Butler Jr. arrived at the scene and used fire extinguishers from the cruiser and the town office to hold down the fire until firefighters with a truck could arrive, he said.

The fire extended to cedar shingles on the front of the building, which is attached to the Chuck Wagon Restaurant and into the wooden overhang and started to extend into the roof, he said.

Firefighters were able to get the fire out before more damage was done.

Damage is in the thousands of dollars to the Treasure Chest, Pineau said. The store is closed.

Smoke seeped into the Chuck Wagon and the owner of the building, Normand Paradis was checking with state officials to see if the restaurant could open.
