Members of the newly organized Montagnards Snowshoe Club of this city plan to walk to Lake Auburn next Sunday afternoon, leaving here at 1 o’clock, and have supper at the cottage of Joseph Phoenix. Races for the men and women will be arranged. Last Wednesday night 16 members went to Lake Auburn.
50 years ago, 1961
A demonstration of teaching French to fourth-grade students was presented last evening at a meeting of the Pettingill School Parent-Teacher Association at the school.
Miss Madeline Morneau, teacher of French in the elementary grades of the Lewiston school system, conducted a class of 10 volunteers, describing her methods of teaching the subject. She first taught them how to greet the teacher, and how to say their own names in French. From there, she went on to numbers and French songs.

MEXICO — Hot-air balloon rides will be available Sunday at the second annual Black Mountain Winter Carnival, which continues Saturday with ski jumping and a coronation ball.
“For $5 a ride, interested persons can get a spectacular view of the area between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday,” said Erik Roderick, planning committee chairman.
The winter carnival began on Friday afternoon with a softball game on skis.
