WILTON — Selectmen will discuss options for the Village View Playground with Michael Burke from Community Concepts when they meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the town office. Time will also be allotted for any public comments about the playground.
Selectman Irv Faunce initiated the meeting with Burke and recently proposed that selectmen consider the potential use of the property as a residential site.
After Recreational Director Frank Donald told the board a few months ago that the playground was seldom used, the board agreed to consider other options for the property.
Faunce discussed it with Burke, chief executive officer for Community Concepts, but made no commitments.
Burke and his staff explored two alternatives, including developing a family home under the “Self Help” housing program or partnering with Foster Tech on the design and construction of a “green” energy-efficient house. Under the Community Concepts’ Self Help program, family homes are constructed when a group of families get together and help each other build homes.
Community Concepts has also worked with Foster Tech in the past to rehabilitate portable classrooms and turn them into mobile home residences that are placed in Franklin County, Faunce previously said.
Prior to an earlier board meeting this month, Town Manager Rhonda Irish checked with the Department of Conservation to see whether the town could sell the property since a federally funded grant was used to create the playground.
A sale of the property would require the money be used for a playground, either investing in a new playground or adding on to an existing one, she told the board. If the town decided to give the property away, the appraised value of the lot would need to be invested in another playground.
The board decided to start by exploring the Community Concepts options and invited Burke to the March 1 meeting.
The board will also review bids for road paving and cemetery maintenance. In other business, the board will hear an update on the Canal Street Bridge project and the Wilton Primary School.
