BETHEL, Maine (AP) — With oil hovering near $100 a barrel, a western Maine wood pellet boiler company is offering new customers a deal on wood pellets.

Maine Energy Systems of Bethel says it will lock in a pellet price of no more than $239 a ton for three years to the first 1,000 new customers who install one of its wood-pellet furnaces. The company says that price is equivalent to $1.99 a gallon for heating oil.

The offer is available to new customers who live within 150 miles of Bethel or 60 miles of Ashland.

Maine Energy Systems was founded in 2008 by former ski mogul and Republican gubernatorial hopeful Les Otten and two business partners.
