FARMINGTON — An informational meeting will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the Healthy Community Coalition (HCC) offices, 105 Mt. Blue Circle, for its Mapping Our Footsteps initiative volunteers. Interested groups, classes or families will receive free training on how to use geographic GPS units.

The project funded by the Environmental Funders Network, focuses on connecting public health and the local natural environment through the promotion of local walking and hiking trails throughout Greater Franklin County.

During its first year, a comprehensive Web site of local trails, www.mainetrailfinder.com, was launched thanks to volunteers who had mapped and documented area trails. More volunteers are needed in this second year of the project to continue trail mapping and participate in trail clean-up days and other community events.

“Mapping Our Footsteps promotes the quality of place we call Greater Franklin County by exposing both youth and adults to the region’s natural resources, revealing our cultural heritage and promoting physical activity,” HCC Executive Director Heather Davis said.

“This is an excellent project for community groups and families. It gets you outside, walking, hiking and enjoying all the beauty of western Maine. And it’s free,” said Program Coordinator Lorri Brown.
