BATH-BRUNSWICK — The Oratorio Chorale will welcome spring with a concert featuring music by Gilbert & Sullivan, as well as Ivor Davies, Hugo Wolf and Arthur Sullivan.
The operetta, “Trial by Jury,” will cap off a program of Davies’ “Prayers From the Ark,” Wolf’s “Six Sacred Songs” and Arthur Sullivan’s “The Long Day Closes.”
The chorale will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at Montgomery Theater at Morse High School in Bath, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at Studzinski Recital Hall on the Bowdoin College campus in Brunswick.
“Trial by Jury” is a one-act comedy about a young lady’s lawsuit against a man who has broken his promise to marry her. Its premiere in London in 1875 was a smash hit, and it has kept audiences laughing ever since. Playwright W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan had been collaborating for about 2 ½ years when they produced “Trial.” This proved to be the beginning of an infamous 25-year partnership.
Soloists for the operetta include John D. Adams, bass/baritone; Devin Dukes, soprano; Jason Phillips, tenor; Andrew Fenniman, tenor; and Oratorio Chorale members Tim Badgley and John Todd, bass. The chorale plays the parts of the jury, bridesmaids and the public. Pianist Jesse Feinberg will accompany the chorale.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, half-price for students and free for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased from members of the chorale and at Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick; Now You’re Cooking and Magnolia’s in Bath; and Herman’s Books and Stationery in Freeport.
