HALLOWELL, Maine (AP) — Officials are investigating why a roof collapsed at a central Maine ice arena that was used by high school and club hockey teams and for public skating sessions.
The roof of the Kennebec Ice Arena in Hallowell collapsed shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday. Hallowell Code Enforcement Officer Maureen Aucoin said it’s amazing nobody was hurt.
According to the Kennebec Journal, the entire length of the 240-foot-long roof collapsed and structural steel girders were torn from the ground. Insulation was spotted 35 feet up in a tree, and ceiling tiles littered the arena’s parking lot.
The arena was built in 1970.
