RUMFORD — A Rumford teen will be held without bail in a Paris jail through the weekend due to previous violations of bail conditions, police and Oxford County Jail officials said Friday.

Charles Lee Gannon Jr., 18, of 236 Knox St., is accused of breaking into a relative’s home last month and stealing an Xbox 360 game console valued at $209, Rumford police Sgt. Douglas Maifeld said.

Gannon, who is unemployed, according to jail records, was arrested on Thursday afternoon on charges of felony burglary and theft, criminal mischief and violating bail conditions. He was taken to the Paris jail and will be arraigned April 15 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.

Normally, the threshold for felony theft is $1,000, but Maifeld said Gannon had two prior arrests on charges of felony burglaries and thefts in Rumford and Mexico.

“Because of the two priors for thefts and burglaries, the theft charge is a Class C felony,” he said.

Prior to Thursday’s arrest by Rumford police Sgt. Tracey Higley, Gannon was free on bail in both cases and awaiting trial. That bail was revoked due to the new charges and no bail allowed, Maifeld said.

A jail official said late Friday afternoon that Gannon would remain in jail until an initial court appearance Monday in Superior Court.

Rumford police initially arrested Gannon and two others on Jan. 30 on charges they broke into Oxford Lanes bowling alley the night before and stole $184 cash. Gannon was also charged with violating bail conditions.

After being taken to the Paris jail, he was released on bail.

The January bail violation stemmed from an incident on Dec. 26, 2010, in which Gannon and another Rumford man were arrested the following day by Mexico police and accused of a rash of vehicle burglaries.

In that case, the pair were accused of taking items valued at about $500 from five unlocked vehicles parked on Middle Avenue and Kimball Street in Mexico on the night of Dec. 26.

After receiving reports from Middle Avenue residents who saw two men rummaging through cars, a police officer followed the men’s footprints in the snow to the pair. They were taken to the Paris jail and freed on bail the next day.
