LEWISTON — More than 100 people, including 11 state representatives and a senator, attended the first Western Maine Labor Council Legislative Breakfast at the Green Ladle at Lewiston High School on Saturday.
Five speakers addressed some of the issues facing Mainers today, such as the right-to-work bill, prevailing wages for school construction, the safety of both hospital workers and patients, the minimum wage and the biennial state budget and how it will affect teachers, public workers, retirees and our communities.
Each speaker was given four minutes and then each lawmaker was given the same length of time to explain their position on those issues, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The Western Maine Labor Council is a union organization, but union membership was not required to attend.
The breakfast was free, but a basket was passed around and more than $300 was collected for the students of the Green Ladle for their hard work and a fantastic meal.
