RUMFORD — Police continue to investigate the second hit-and-run incident in two months that sent another Rumford man to the hospital.

Christopher Patneaude, 26, of 654 South Rumford Road, told police he was struck on Monday night on the road beside his vehicle by a dark colored car that appeared to be like a Chevy Cavalier, according to investigating Officer Lawrence Winson’s report.

Patneaude, who suffered injuries to his arms, head and chest, drove to Rumford Hospital for treatment, where Winson responded to the complaint at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

According to the report, Patneaude told Winson he had parked his vehicle on the roadside because his driveway wasn’t plowed.

He said he went into his house to check the heat, returned to his vehicle and was walking around the rear of it when struck and thrown into a snow bank.

Patneaude said the car that struck him did not stop. Winson said the man wasn’t able to provide a better description of the car.

The officer went to the scene, saw the man’s hat lying in the driveway, but failed to find any evidence from the car.

He said he then drove along South Rumford Road, Milton Road and Route 232 trying to locate the suspect car, but failed to find it.

In the first hit-and-run, pedestrian Robert McKinnon, 32, of Rumford was struck from behind at 7:42 p.m. on Jan. 22 on Route 2 (Rumford Avenue) while walking along the west-bound lane.

The driver of the truck that hit McKinnon stopped long enough to determine they hit someone, and then fled the scene, according to witnesses.

In that incident, evidence at the scene led police to believe the suspect vehicle was a white Chevy Silverado pickup truck of between the years of 2007 to 2011.

Police appealed to the public for help and even got the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles to identify all 2007-11 white Chevrolet Silverados registered in the state to then check for front-end damage. But no luck.

“I don’t think we’ll probably ever get lucky on that one,” Sgt. Doug Maifeld said of the McKinnon case on Wednesday after reading Winson’s report.
