NEWRY — Thirty-eight residents at Monday night’s town meeting approved a municipal budget of $826,290, which is $173,332 less than last year.

The SAD 44 assessment is expected later this spring or early summer.

“We had a wonderful town meeting,” Administrator Loretta Powers said Tuesday afternoon. “Everything went well. It was nice and smooth.”

With former longtime Selectman Steve Wight moderating, the meeting finished in about 60 minutes. Voters approved all articles.

“There wasn’t anything controversial,” Powers said.

There also wasn’t much discussion. She said people wanted to know what kind of work would be done on the Grange hall, in which the meeting and a potluck supper that preceded it, were held.

Powers said voters also wanted to know if this year’s capital improvement project — replacing the Paine Bridge on Branch Road — would go out to bid.

She said it would, but selectmen have yet to start the process to do so.

The work will be the town’s third and last bridge to replace on the road.

Powers said voters re-elected Selectman Wendy Hanscom, dog officer Alan Fleet and SAD 44 director Bonnie Largess.
