HALLOWELL — On Monday, March 14, the duo The Squid Jiggers will bring its blend of Celtic and maritime music to Slates as part of the Monday Night Concert Series.
Inveterate musicians Dave Rowe and Troy R. Bennett make up The Squid Jiggers, taking the group’s name from the A.R. Scammell song “Squid Jigging Ground,” which is about fishing for squid in the waters off Newfoundland.
Rowe continues to tour as lead vocalist and guitarist with Dave Rowe Trio, a group he founded after his father, Tom Rowe, bass guitarist with the folk trio Schooner Fare, died in 2004. With the formation of The Squid Jiggers, Rowe comes full circle, picking up his dad’s trademark bass guitar and playing many of the songs he used to hear Schooner Fare perform many years ago.
Bennett played and toured with the Irish band Rakish Paddy of the Portland area before traveling throughout Europe with his guitar, busking on street corners. On his return to the States, he started a Celtic duo called Bailey’s Mistake as well as the Half Moon Jug Band, a high-energy folk group specializing in kazoos and banjos. The band continues to tour extensively across New England.
Slates will open for dinner at 5:30 p.m., with the concert beginning at 8:15 p.m. For reservations, call 622-9575.
