PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A Republican congressman is questioning the Pentagon’s decision to hire former Maine Gov. John Baldacci to review how the military runs its health care and wellness programs.
The Portland Press Herald reported Thursday that U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina raised concerns during a committee meeting this week in Washington. Wilson, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee’s military personnel subcommittee, asked why having a “military health care czar” isn’t a duplication of duties already done by Defense Department officials.
Baldacci, who served eight years as Maine governor and four terms in Congress, did not immediately respond to a message left for him Thursday at the Pentagon.
Members of Maine’s congressional delegation voiced support for Baldacci’s hiring. Sen. Olympia Snowe said he is an “ideal fit” for the job.
