AUBURN — Jasmine Cafe, a new restaurant offering Asian fusion fare, has opened at the Auburn Plaza under the ownership of the Saengwong family.
The family had operated Thai Jar Earn restaurant in Lewiston the last five years.
The family has been working for two years to find, renovate and staff this second location, said Supannee Saengwong, manager of the new restaurant. When Thai Jar Earn needed to be remodeled, she said, they began thinking of developing a new location entirely. They began looking at different sites, with “the atmosphere being the most important” qualification.
The family settled at the Auburn Plaza on Center Street, in the former Park City Pizza location, next to Flagship Cinemas. While the new location offered the space they desired, the “equipment for pizza-making didn’t really work for us,” Saengwong said, and the family spent the last few months rebuilding the kitchen and renovating the dining room.
With a capacity of 101, more access to parking and a larger kitchen, the new restaurant offers much-needed space for the family’s operation, Saengwong explained.
Jasmine Cafe is working with a culinary program, based in Thailand, that sends graduates to work as interns at restaurants and hotels in the United States. Four interns will arrive this week to begin an 18-month stint at the restaurant.
The dining room has been remodeled, Saengwong said, to be stylish and modern, a reflection of the Asian fusion cuisine they serve.
While Saengwong’s father and mother, Samer and Somrudee, will cook many of the dishes — as they do at Thai Jar Earn — they are being joined by Chef Pao Duangpratheep, who worked with the Saengwongs 10 years ago at a Thai restaurant in Boston. “We recruited old friends,” Saengwong said.
The Saengwongs are restaurant veterans. While daughter Supannee has studied culinary arts and hospitality, Samer and Somrudee have worked in and operated restaurants in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
The new restaurant will feature an extensive menu of pan-Asian and Asian fusion dishes. Jasmine Cafe will be “more focused on not only Thai, but also Korean and Japanese” cuisine, Saengwong said. She encouraged Thai Jar Earn customers who don’t see their favorite dish on the menu to “just ask for it and we’ll make it,” she said.
While Thai Jar Earn will remain open for the time being, Saengwong said, the family hopes to eventually transition their entire business over to the Auburn location. Jasmine Cafe offers take-out service and delivery. And they hope to expand with a catering service in the near future, according to Saengwong.
Jasmine Cafe is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is located at 730 Center St.
