MEXICO — A sulfur-like odor at the Region 9 School of Applied Technology on Thursday afternoon was likely from the nearby NewPage paper mill sludge dump, fire Chief Gary Wentzell said.

The odor caused several people to have headaches and prompted a search for the cause by the Mexico Fire Department.

School Director Brenda Gammon said the department used a detector to check for carbon monoxide and an infrared camera to check for hidden flames. Neither was found.

Wentzell said about a half-dozen firefighters and one engine responded to the 1 p.m. call. He said he believed the odor from the NewPage Corp. sludge dump at the rear of the school likely drifted into the building.

The school’s windows were opened for ventilation.

Gammon said no one needed medical attention.
