DEAR SUN SPOTS: In the Feb. 19 story about the stained-glass windows from St. Patrick’s Church being sold to Japan, there is one scene of a man pouring from a jug? Is this a depiction of the water-to-wine story or something else? Thanks. — Rick Payette, rpayette@maine.rr.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots e-mailed with Irene at the Prince of Peace Parish, who put your question to Msgr. Marc Caron. He said that it “is a picture of the water changing into wine (Jesus’ first miracle) at the wedding of Cana.”

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Several years ago I had a lady make me many machine-knitted sweaters. I have since lost contact with her. Could you put me in touch with anyone who makes sweaters using knitting machines? The place in Rockland I found seems to have gone out of business. I would appreciate any help from your readers. Thank you! — No Name, Auburn, 782-1634

ANSWERS: Sun Spots always thought that hand-knitted sweaters were the most desired, but she, too, learns from the column!

There was information about using and buying knitting machines online, but she didn’t find anyone to knit a sweater for you. Hopefully readers can help.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Now that Carol’s Sewing and Alterations in New Auburn has closed, I am looking for someone who can mend cotton, wool and cashmere sweaters I have been setting aside for some time now.

I am also interested in learning new hobbies and am wondering if Sun Spots knows of any businesses or individuals who offer upholstery, sewing classes (such as how to make curtains, etc.) and Asian cooking (especially Thai)? Thanks. — Debbie via e-mail

ANSWER: Talented knitters, who abound in Maine, will undoubtedly respond to your first request. As for the second, have you looked into adult education classes from your local school system? Sun Spots visited www.lewistonadulted.org, where the list of current classes included several on cooking (although none was identified as Asian), knitting, rug braiding and many other options. You can search for courses near you at www.maineadulted.org. The prices for these courses are usually quite reasonable.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Edward Little High School Alumni Association would like to remind ELHS reunion classes that the alumni association welcomes donations. Many classes make donations after their reunions.

All monies go to the ELHS Alumni Scholarship Fund. This fund provides $1,000 scholarships to five or more graduating seniors. At one time, there was a tradition that the 25- and 50-year reunions donated $1,000 or their high school numerals to the fund.

On behalf of the ELHS Alumni Board, I ask reunion classes to consider a donation so the scholarship fund will continue to grow.

Anyone with questions can contact Secretary Diane Freve, President Mary Lou Magno or myself. Thanks, Sun Spots for helping us get our message to the community. — Mary Ann Norcross, ELHS Alumni Board member, norc@gwi.net, 783-6651
