LEWISTON — Terry & the Telstars, a local popular 1960s band that played regularly at the PAL Hop, will rock Heritage Hall at the Franco-American Heritage Center on Friday, March 25.

Terry & the Telstars included Nick Knowlton, lead vocals; Pierre Nadeau, keyboards; Terry McCarthy, lead guitar; Roland Bechard, bass; and Danny Caron, drums.

The band won a statewide battle of the bands sponsored by VOX music products, which lead to a recording session in Boston in 1968. The resulting single, “Reasons/Stop and Think” was unreleased until 1996, when it was included on Arf Arf’s “New England Teen Scene Unreleased CD.”

Terry & The Telstars’ claim to fame was opening for rock ‘n’ roll legend Jimmy Hendrix in Lewiston.

Knowlton has been involved in many projects in the Maine area. After Terry & The Telstars evolved into White Fluff, he recorded a single, “Jonathan Cloud,” on the EAB label, and was asked to assume the song’s name as his own recording name. The ‘b’ side, “Stop and Think,” was the same as the “Reasons” flip side.

Knowlton worked in the bands Good ‘n’ Plenty and Katfish during the 1970s. In 1975, Katfish hit the Billboard Charts at No. 52 with a cover of the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.”

Knowlton formed Katahdin in 1979, recording “Black is Black” and “Hard Core Rock n’ Rolla,” released in 1981. He has also done many local radio jingles over the years as well as other recordings.

Last August, Terry & The Telstars, along with The Innkeepers, The Moon Dawgs, The Travelers, The Rockin’ Recons and The Royal Knights performed at the Pal Hop Reunion and; most recently, at the sold-out New Year’s Eve bash at the Ramada Inn.

The performance in the clublike atmosphere of the recently renovated hall, which has a cash bar, dance floor and main stage, will begin at 9 p.m.

Tickets, $10, may be purchased at the door, by calling the box office 689-2000 or online at www.francoamericanheritage.org.
