AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The new head of the Maine Turnpike Authority is canceling the annual employee recognition banquet.
Peter Mills says he’s ending the 21-year tradition because of concerns that the agency has been too lavish in its spending. It had been scheduled for May.
In recent years the banquet has been held at the Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel in South Portland. It has cost from $15,000 to $19,000.
Mills says the authority needs to reduce spending so it operates more like other government agencies.
He tells the Kennebec Journal the authority likes its employees, but officials are going to have to be more careful about spending.
The authority oversees the turnpike, which runs from Kittery to Augusta. It employs about 480 people and generates about $100 million a year in toll revenues.
