100 years ago,1911

Peter Anabas, a Greek living on Lincoln street, called at the Sun office last evening to announce that the Greek people of Lewiston needed a special officer to look after their needs and wants. He also stated that he was a candidate for the position. Mr. Anabas has lived in the United States for 10 years and is an American citizen now.

 He stated that there are about 500 Greeks in Lewiston and that they needed some kind of police protection. He thought it best that they have somebody of their own nationality who understood their language. In a short time, he hopes to establish a school where some of his fellow countrymen can learn the English language.

50 years ago, 1961

Auburn City Clerk Leroy E. Linnell yesterday issued a reminder to Auburn residents that proof of poll tax payment or abatement is required before a person can purchase a hunting or fishing license.

Linnell said many persons have come to purchase such licenses and had no proof of their poll tax status. The city clerk pointed out that the requirement is a state hunting and fishing license law.

25 years ago, 1986

Sitting toward the northern end of the rail lines, Lewiston’s Carter Milling Co. has had to scramble to be able to obtain grain necessary to supply its own — and others’ — livestock feed customers in the wake of the Maine Central Railroad strike.

General Manager Robert Hoffman said the firm has taken advantage of northern rail routes controlled by Canadian National Railways to continue receiving shipments since the start of the MCRR strike on March 3.
