RUMFORD — Donald E. Haines, 99, went to his Lord peacefully Wednesday, March 23, at the Rumford Community Home. He was a resident of Harlow Hill Road in Mexico.

He was born in Mexico, June 17, 1911, a son of Leon and Mertie (Davenport) Haines. He was a 1929 graduate of Mexico High School, where he excelled in track. He worked for Oxford Paper Co. in the finishing room for more than 44 years, until his retirement in 1973.

He was a member of the Mexico First Baptist Church, where he began playing the organ at the age of 12, sharing the position with his mother, Mertie Haines. In due course, he became the church organist and he served for 85 years.

For many years, Don had been a guest at many area nursing homes, taking his musical talents to residents. He also taught and mentored a number of younger pianist and organists.

He attended many gem shows, where he loved to spend time. He was proud of his turquoise and tourmaline collection, which he wore often. Donald was known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He displayed love for his family by taking care of his mother until her passing. He also loved going to the Maine coast in the summer, sometimes taking others with him and enjoying the Maine seafood.

In September 2010, the Mexico Board of Selectmen named Don as Mexico’s Boston Gold Cane holder for being Mexico’s oldest resident. He was a member of the Greater Rumford Senior Citizen’s Club and was well-known for his flower gardens.
