FARMINGTON — How many jazz duos have you heard consisting of mandolin and clarinet?
Jamie Masefield, the man behind the Jazz Mandolin Project, met virtuoso clarinetist Brad Terry last April, and the two immediately clicked.
On Saturday, April 2, Masefield and Terry, who has played with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Cheatham and harmonica player Howard Levy of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, will perform at Nordica Auditorium.
Terry is probably best known for his duo album, “The Living Room Tapes,” recorded with legendary jazz guitarist Lenny Breau.
Since 1993, the Jazz Mandolin Project has pushed the boundaries of what the mandolin can do and has toured throughout the United States and internationally.
Terry’ nephew described the duo’s music with this analogy: It’s like a noncompetitive tennis match. Get the ball over the net with an interesting spin, but put it where the other player can reach it and return it with his spin.
“Sometimes, the volleys are pretty fast-paced,” Terry said. “Jamie listens and plays on a very high level.”
The concert, put on by the Arts Institute of Western Maine in affiliation with the University of Maine at Farmington, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 at the door, children under 16 admitted free.
