PARIS — The Paris Utility District will hold a public hearing Monday evening on a proposed sewer rate increase.

According to PUD Director Steve Arnold, the minimum charge, for up to 1,200 cubic feet, would increase from $94 per quarter to $124.08, or 32 percent.

Arnold said the recent treatment plant upgrade will cost almost $5 million after another $5 million in grant money, and the increase is needed to pay for the district’s higher debt obligation.

“When you borrow money, you have to pay it back,” Arnold said.

Arnold said the upgrade will be finished this spring after more than three years of construction. He said the equipment upgrade was necessary for the 35-year-old plant. The expected lifespan or a treatment plant, according to the state, is just 20 years.

“I’m hoping for 40 years this time,” Arnold said.

Residents are invited to comment on the proposed increase at the hearing, which is set for 7 p.m. at the Paris Fire Station.
