LEWISTON — Patriotism, love of country and paying homage to America will all be on-stage at the 2011 Maine Games National Anthem Audition, to be held Saturday, April 2, at Kora Shrine Temple, 11 Sabattus St.

Singers age 10 and up are invited to submit their application for the audition by filling in the online form at mainegames.org. Those applying are asked to submit a brief answer to “What the Star Spangled Banner Means to Me.”

Doors will open at 1 p.m., with invited singers needing to be checked in by 1:30. The audition will begin at 2 p.m. and will last approximately two hours.

Singers will be given a maximum of 90 seconds to bring their audience to the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Maine Games Executive Director Jeff Scully said, “We all know a great national anthem when we hear it. What the Maine Games is looking for is a traditional version that highlights the song and its message, and not necessarily the creativity of the singer.”

The singer chosen as Maine Games National Anthem vocalist will have the opportunity to perform at a Portland Seadogs home game at Hadlock Field, at the 22nd annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic and other opportunities.

There is no cost to apply for the audition. The Maine Games is asking for a $3 donation a person to attend the event as a spectator.

The Maine Games is the Pine Tree State’s official State Games organization which provides an opportunity for amateur athletes of all ages and abilities to compete on a statewide stage, practice good sportsmanship, and to develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
