DIXFIELD — Selectmen agreed to buy a new waste oil furnace for the town garage after a presentation by public works foreman David Phair on Monday night.
The town will purchase the furnace from Dirigo Waste Oil of Waterville, Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky said.
The savings from using waste oil — much of it is coming to the town at no cost — is worth the $6,753 investment, Skibitsky said. “It will provide 100 percent of the heat for the garage,” he said.
The current waste oil furnace developed a crack that can’t be repaired, Phair said.
Also, because Regional School Unit 10 also uses the town garage for repair of its buses, the school district is expected to help pay for the furnace and to participate in the purchase of waste oil.
Also at Monday’s board meeting, Dixfield police Chief Richard Pickett said his department has received several afghans from a local Linus Project that will be given to children who experience some kind of trauma due to fires or calls covered by police.
He also warned motorists to be particularly vigilant near the Bluffs, which is a section of Route 2 near the Police Department that is often the site of deer crossings.
In other matters:
* Planning Board Chairman David Harvey presented proposed changes to the town’s Shoreland Zoning Ordinance that will go to public hearing, then to vote at the May town meeting. Except for one section that calls for narrowing trails from 10 feet wide to 6 feet wide, he said most changes were related to language and “housekeeping” matters.
* Selectmen appointed former Selectman Dan Mitchell to a seat on the Med-Care Ambulance Service board held previously by Cheryl Dickson.
* A tax-acquired multiunit building on High Street will be used as a training facility for the police and fire departments.
