Another slow start, another explosive second period, another easy win for the Lewiston Area Youth Hockey midgets at the U18 nationals.

Spencer Martin chalked up two goals and three assists and Drake Hart potted a pair of goals and an assist to give Lewiston a 10-1 win over the Atlanta Jr. Knights in round-robin preliminary action Thursday in Gates Mills, OH.

“It was just like last game,” said coach Bob Parker, whose team beat another Atlanta team, 13-2, in Wednesday’s opener. “It started off a little slow and tight. We were up 1-0 after one period and then we got six goals in the second period.”

The team is made up of players from Lewiston, St. Dom’s and Messalonskee high schools and Hebron Academy. Eight different players found the back of the net for Lewiston, including single markers by Shane Hearn, Alex Parker, Alex Berry, Nate Bergeron (two assists), Sam Cloutier and Dylan Rodrigue (two assists).

“We have lots of depth and a good coaching staff,” said Alex Mills, a junior defensman at Hebron Academy.”Most of it’s depth.”

After Hearn scored the only goal of the first period, Bergeron kicked off the second-period onslaught with a goal 4:38 in.

“We haven’t had the best start, but once we’ve gotten into the game, we’ve started getting better,” Mills said. “They were a bigger team, so they were throwing their weight. We started using our speed and then hit them back and started playing our game and it opened things up a little bit.”

Lewiston went 2-for-8 on the power play, with Martin and Drake Hart lighting the lamp. Linemates Martin, Hart and Shane Hearn combined for five goals and five assists.

“It was more of a line effort and team effort than anything,” said Martin, a St. Dom’s junior who earned first star status.

“We’re all good, strong players on the team, and we all have the same goal for the weekend and that’s to win,” he added.

Messalonskee’s Nate Delguidice made 11 saves and surrendered just a third-period, power-play goal for Lewiston (2-0), which outshot Atlanta , 51-12, and clinched a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. It wraps up round-robin play against the Oklahoma Oil Kings at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
