Representatives of the Maine Friends of Aomori Earthquake Relief program will hit the “send” button this Wednesday afternoon at TDBank in Lewiston to wire approx. $5000 directly to Aomori Prefecture Disaster Relief Management.
Aomori Prefecture has been Maine’s official Sister State since 1996.
The organization hopes that this will be the first of many donations from Maine people to help Aomori recover from the earthquake and tsunami disasters.
Funds will be transferred from the Friends of Aomori – Earthquake Relief account at TDBank to Michinoku Bank LTD in Aomori. The money will benefit Aomori-ken Saigai Taisaku Honbu, the Aomori Prefecture Disaster Relief Management.
Also on hand for the event will be Naoto Kobayashi, teacher of Japanese at Hall-Dale High School, accompanied by members of the high school’s National Honor Society, and students from Southern Maine Community College’s 3D Sculpture/Design classes. Both groups have been making origami cranes to bring good luck to all of those suffering in Japan. There will be no fewer than 1,000 cranes on display at the event.
Maine Friends of Aomori is an alliance of four Maine organizations with close Japanese ties: the Friends of Shinagawa (Portland’s Sister City), the Japan-America Society of Maine, the Maine-Aomori Sister State Advisory Council (Maine’s official Aomori organization), and the Maine International Trade Center.
Others wishing to donate to the fund can do so at any TDBank branch office in Maine or by sending a check made out to Friends of Aomori – Earthquake Relief to TDBank, 790 Lisbon Street, Lewiston, ME 04240-6695.
