A female common merganser leads three males up and out of the open water at the Lake Auburn outlet beside Route 4 on Wednesday. Common mergansers are migratory birds and are often the first waterfowl to return north in the spring. They usually migrate along major rivers, lake chains and coastlines during the day and overland by night.
