GORHAM — The owner of a Maine recycling company is looking for someone to buy his Gorham facility and remove piles of waste that have accumulated at the site.

Eric Hamlin of the Department of Environmental Protection says a number of waste management companies have expressed an interest in taking over the Plan-It Recycling & Transfer Inc. facility.

But he says it would cost $700,000 for the buyer to dispose of the waste in a commercial landfill. It would cost less than half that if the state removes it and puts it in an Augusta landfill.

The Portland Press Herald says that last year the town and the state sued Plan-It Recycling for violating local and state waste storage laws by letting piles of trash accumulate on its 5-acre site.
