GILEAD — A 68-year-old Vermont man suffered cuts and bruises when his 2005 loaded Freightliner tractor-trailer truck went off Route 2 and rolled over late Sunday night.

Oxford County Deputy Sully Rizzo said Duane E. Friot, of Richmond, Vt., was driving north on Route 2 on a new section of road near the railroad tracks at about 11:30 p.m. when it crossed into the oncoming lane, rolled over, and toppled down an embankment. The truck and trailer landed between two utility poles. Central Maine Power employees were called to make repairs.

The truck was loaded with grain valued at $70,000, Rizzo said.

Friot was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. Spokeswomen at the hospital said Monday that they don’t have a record of Friot being admitted.

Rizzo said the tractor and trailer were destroyed. He valued them at at least $100,000.

Representatives from the truck’s owner, Starrs United, Inc. of North Troy, Vt., were at the scene Monday morning attempting to salvage some of the containers filled with grain and trying to pull the truck onto the highway.

Rizzo said Bethel Rescue  took Friot to the hospital.

Eight Gilead Fire Department firefighters with one engine assisted at the scene by rerouting traffic onto one lane for about two hours.

Rizzo said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
