FARMINGTON — Henderson Memorial Baptist Church has announced Holy Week Services.
Palm Sunday : Holy Week begins on Sunday, April 17, with the celebration of Palm Sunday, when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey while the crowds waved palm branches to welcome the teacher from Galilee. At the 10:30 worship service palms will be provided for all worshipers. The message will be a dramatic reading of the gospel story from Matthew. The story will take us from the joy of Palm Sunday to the sadness of Good Friday, leaving the good news of Easter for the following Sunday.
Maundy Thursday: On Thursday, April 21, there will be a service at 7 p.m. to remember the Last Supper Jesus shared with his disciples, a Passover meal Jesus imbued with new meaning. The service closes with the candlelight reading of the rest of the story from scripture; one by one the candles are extinguished until all is dark. This portion of the service is called “Tenebrae” or the lengthening of the shadows.
Good Friday: On Friday, April 22, the community is invited to a one-hour service, beginning at noon. Henderson Memorial Baptist Church will host this annual service for the Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry. The service will tell the story of Jesus’ crucifixion through images of The Stations of the Cross, provided by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The service itself will be led by clergy and lay leaders from the FAEM churches.
Easter Sunday: An Easter Sunrise service will be held on Voter Hill, Sunday, April 24. The community is invited to welcome the news that the tomb is empty and Jesus has risen! Hot coffee and refreshments to follow. At Henderson Memorial Baptist Church there will be a public Easter breakfast at 9 a.m. At 10:30 everyone is invited to worship and celebrate the news that Jesus is alive.
