JAY — Selectmen voted Monday to support Town Manager Ruth Cushman’s recommendation not to fill a vacancy in the Public Works Department.

The action came after an executive session, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said Tuesday.

Shawn Farmer resigned from the position to take another job, she said.

She and Public Works foreman John Johnson had lengthy discussions on the matter, Cushman said. She brought her recommendation, a budget-based decision, to the board to make sure they supported it, she said.

That leaves Public Works with 10 employees, including himself, Johnson said. About four years ago, there were 13, he said.

In other business Monday, selectmen voted to give $2,576 from the town’s recreation lot fund to the Area Youth Sports organization to improve the Dow and Jay Village baseball and softball fields.

The group received a $1,500 grant last month to build one dugout and would like to build a second one to complete dugouts on one field. Members also plan to use the money to improve the safety and appearance of the fields.
